Rhett Russo, a visiting
critic at Pratt Institute, also works as a project architect at Hanrahan
& Meyers Architects in New York City. He was the winner of the Dinkeloo
Prize, and before receiving his Master of Architecture Degree from Columbia
University, was a winner of the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Fellowship
and the McKim Award for Excellence. His independant projects include two
competition entries. The Particle House project, for a temporary lockerhouse
facility in lower Manhattan, responds to the volatility of the site and
its history of terrorist attacks. The building's transparency and projection
of surveillance X-rays to the public create a voyersitic urban experience.
SpF 54 Sunsheilds: Sun/Wind Garden, Pier 54 (designed for the competition
sponsored by the Van Alen Institute) is "an artificial landscape"
that is spatially reshaped by the fluctuations and movements of the wind,
sun and recreational program. Solar quills, that collect solar energy
for nighttime illumination, cover the surface of the structure, which
contains a running track and greenhouses.
